S. João da Fraga

The origins of this chapel, built in honour of S. João da Fraga, are unknown. To get there, at an altitude of over 1100 metres, you have to walk one of the most emblematic routes in Pitões das Júnias. Every year, on the first Sunday after St John’s Day, the inhabitants of Pitões das Júnias fulfil the religious tradition, whose origin is also unknown, of climbing to the top of the mountain in pilgrimage to the saint who protects the village. Tradition dictates that at the end of the journey, which takes around an hour and a half, the inhabitants celebrate by an oak grove, eating the snacks left there beforehand and dancing to the sound of concertinas.
