Alto Tâmega is characterized by being a region with significant distances between the main population centers, with villages geographically dispersed, but traditionally concentrated. The problems of accessibility to the outside of the region have been solved to a large extent by the construction of the new road axes(A24, A7, and direct connection to the A4). It also has a direct connection from the A24 to the A75 highway in Galicia, which in turn connects to the A52 (Autovia das Rias Baixas).
The internal network of road communications has improved, even though there has been a further increase in the use of traditional routes, due to the increased cost of driving on the A24. Besides the effect of the introduction of tolls, traffic on these highways also suffered the effect of the current economic and financial situation, which affects citizens and companies and is reflected, in a generalized manner, in the evolution of traffic volumes at a national level.
The road connections, through freeways, also allow direct connection to other relevant transport infrastructures in the North of Portugal (Leixões Port and Sá Carneiro Airport) and Galicia (Vigo Port, Vigo Airport and Santiago de Compostela), within a radius of 200 km.
