The wine presses excavated in the rock are among the oldest vestiges associated with the cultivation of vines in Trás-os-Montes and there are researchers who believe that wine production in this territory may date back to prehistoric times. It was the Romans who increased the taste for wine. In 2010, Adérito Medeiros Freitas, an illustrious Valpacense, published the first edition of Lagares Cavados na Rocha. The remains found prompted work that revealed almost 100 wine presses and lagaretas, spread across 15 parishes.
