Vila Pouca de Aguiar | Onion Fair
Around half a hundred onion producers will be present at the secular Onion Fair, which takes place on 25 September, but the vast majority will start selling their produce on the afternoon of the 24th.
At the fairground, there will be exhibitors with local products and taverns with onion broth, onion snacks, pataniscas, feijoada, pickled fish and other gastronomic delicacies. Local restaurants join in the regional event.
The socio-economic, cultural and sporting activities will almost all take place on 24 and 25 September in Praça Luis de Camões, Praça de Camilo Castelo Branco, Praça João Paulo II, the Municipal Market and the Sports Complex. But the festivities are set to begin the weekend before the fair with the traditional horse race on the sports complex track and more activities associated with the rural world.
On 24 and 25 September, the making of old-fashioned onion broth and the traditional defoliation, the contest for the largest onion, the livestock contest and chegas, street theatre and the onion dance are all popular initiatives.
