The Scurrilous
A mad king, a cunning jester, a dying queen, a sinister friar and a silent executioner, bells ringing in tune, dogs howling desperately. These are the spices behind Michel de Ghelderode’s play ‘O Escurial’, on stage on 5 and 8 October at the Cineteatro Bento Martins, at 21h30.
The writer Michel de Ghelderode is the pseudonym of the Belgian Adhemar Martens, born in Brussels on 3 April 1898 to a family of Flemish origin. His theatre explores the human condition in all its horror and cruelty and his work is controversial and explosive. His works include ‘The Blind’, ‘The Stranger and the Knight’ and ‘School of Buffoons’, among others.
With staging, sets and costumes by Ruy de Matos, ‘O Escurial’ is an absolutely thrilling theatre drama, and its artistic charge, along with its message, absorbs all those who take part in the show.
Tickets, priced at seven euros, are available at the Cine Teatro Bento Martins and can be booked by calling 276 333 919 (national landline).
This activity is developed by the Teatro Experimental Flaviense in partnership with the Municipality of Chaves, under the Cultural Development Collaboration Protocol.
