“The Old Ones” Exhibition

The Municipality of Chaves is promoting a new exhibition in the “Our Artists” cycle at the Municipal Library.

Neplutao, the pseudonym of Isabel Carvalho, from Flavi, will be the next artist to exhibit in the Multipurpose Room of the Municipal Library. The opening of the exhibition “As Velhas” is already scheduled for next Monday, 6th November, at 17:30.

In the artist’s words, the exhibition portrays “the traditional old women in shawls from the villages crying out for something new, something colourful, as if they themselves were tired of this stereotype, as if they were keeping secrets through these colours”.

Through memory, Neplutao conveys the evolution of women’s status, the challenges and achievements, and the importance of the “old women of Xailinho” in the journey of women’s emancipation.

With a degree in architecture and children’s literature, Isabel Carvalho was born in the spa town of Vidago and has taken part in various group exhibitions and “Urban Sketchers” meetings, not only in Portugal but also in Spain. In recent years, she has dedicated herself to teaching plastic expression and is currently trying to found the “Urbansketchers Alto Tâmega”, with the support of “Urban Sketchers Portugal” and the Directorate-General for Heritage.

The exhibition, with free admission, will be open to the public until 29 November, from Monday to Friday, from 09:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, and Saturday from 09:30 to 13:00.
