Exhibition “From this Luminous and Obscure Space”, by Pedro Calapez

Starting his career in drawing, Pedro Calapez (Lisbon, 1953) affirmed himself in the field of painting in the early 1980s, building an oeuvre that crosses both practices in space and time. The exhibition Pedro Calapez “From this luminous and obscure Space” presents a set of works from the Serralves Collection and the Artist’s Collection that emphasize the complementary relationship between painting and drawing that underpins his practice from the late 1970s to the present day. Famous for his exquisite exploration of color and scale, Pedro Calapez develops his practice between abstraction and the representation of places suspended somewhere between the sketch, the scenario, and the ruin. The exhibition moves away from the universe of color to reveal other foundational aspects of Calapez’s practice based on the dialogues he establishes with art history, literature, and architecture. Historical works representing different moments in the artist’s career are presented alongside recent works that show lines of continuity in his artistic practice over more than 40 years.
This exhibition, curated by Joana Valsassina, is part of the Itinerant Exhibitions Programme of the Serralves Collection, which aims to make the Foundation’s collection accessible to diverse audiences from all regions of the country.
