Chaves | Tâmega Boat Race

Typical boat race energises the Tâmega River and revives tradition

On 25 May, the municipality will promote the 1st Tâmega Boat Race, an initiative that won one of the editions of the Chaves Participatory Budget, presented by Marco André Teixeira Chaves, with the support of the Wildfun Association and the Madalena and Samaiões Parish Council.

The meeting point will be next to the headquarters of the Madalena and Samaiões Parish Council.

The ‘chatas’ were small flat-bottomed wooden boats, traditionally used by boatmen in the parishes along the banks of the River Tâmega. They were propelled and navigated by means of a hearth at the opposite end to facilitate handling.

This initiative aims to publicise these boats and their tradition, bringing dynamism and life to the river, while promoting physical exercise and the well-being of the population. This type of race is a recreational and educational tool that can also be used for tourism purposes, bringing various physical and emotional benefits to participants and assistants in full harmony with the river and its natural surroundings.

The ‘Corrida das Barcas do Tâmega – Chaves 2024’ is an event organised by the Municipality of Chaves. Sign up! There will be plenty of entertainment, food and music, as well as registration kits and prizes for all participants.

Those interested in taking part can register for free until 17 May at the Chaves Cultural Centre. The event is limited to a maximum of 24 teams, with each team having four people. The three winning teams will receive team prizes (1st place – €300, 2nd place – €250 and 3rd place – €150).
