Chaves | International Museum Day 2026
On 18 May, the Municipality of Chaves will mark International Museum Day 2026 with a varied programme of cultural initiatives taking place across the municipality’s various museum venues.
Under the theme “Museums Uniting a Divided World”, chosen by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in the year it celebrates its 80th anniversary, the programme invites the community to discover, experience and appreciate the historical, artistic and cultural heritage of Chaves, reinforcing the role of museums as spaces for encounter, dialogue and the construction of collective identity.
Throughout the day, participants will be able to enjoy guided and sensory tours, immersive experiences and moments of well-being, as well as the opening of the exhibition “SEPULCRUM MEMORIA AETERNA”, in a celebration of culture as a unifying force between people, generations and territories.
Among the highlights will be a yoga session held in a museum setting, in the gardens of the Nadir Afonso Museum of Contemporary Art, offering a unique experience of balance, relaxation and connection to cultural heritage. The initiative aims to promote physical and emotional well-being in a unique setting, combining culture, tranquillity and body awareness.
Registration is free but places are limited; you must register online by scanning the QR code by 14 May.
All events are free to attend, reinforcing the council’s commitment to democratising access to culture and promoting museums as vibrant, participatory and inclusive spaces.
