Chaves | 1st Chaves Book Fair

Between 16 and 19 April, the Municipality of Chaves is organising the first edition of the Chaves Book Fair, which will take place at the Quarteirão Cultural. This initiative aims to establish itself as a landmark in the cultural revitalisation of the municipality and in promoting reading habits within the community.
Over four days, the event will feature a varied programme aimed at audiences of all ages, including a workshop, storytelling sessions, round-table discussions, book presentations, book signings, meetings with authors and musical performances, offering a unique and comprehensive experience.

One of the central highlights of this initiative will be the commemoration of the “Sacramental”, considered the first book in the Portuguese language to be printed in Portugal, specifically in the city of Chaves, on 18 April 1488. Written by Clemente Sánchez de Vercial in 1423, it became a crucial milestone in the transition from medieval manuscripts to modern print culture. The celebration of this anniversary takes on particular significance at this first edition of the Book Fair, reinforcing the municipality’s historical role in the landscape of written culture and highlighting its heritage and literary identity.
