Vilar de Nantes

Next to the Serra do Brunheiro, Vilar de Nantes is the transition between the mountains and the valley. Traditionally linked to pottery and basketry, its production is now a tourist and cultural icon.
The wild chestnut wood baskets are made from moistened chestnut, which makes them malleable and easy to handle, and then take on different shapes.
The black clay pieces, made from clay taken from the Chaves valley, are kneaded and homogenised by hand. Their dark colour is obtained during firing, while they are muffled and acquire their traditional colour in the absence of oxygen.
