St Neutel Fort

A 17th-century fort with a star-shaped plan, made up of four regular bastions, inspired by the Vauban system. Its layout is similar to the neighbouring Fort of São Francisco. Highlights include the internal moat and the Chapel of Our Lady of Brotas in the centre of the square of arms. The granite walls are at least 1 metre thick and vary in height between 7 and 10 metres. In addition to the Restoration War, it was also the scene of combat during the monarchist incursions between civilian and military forces and the republican regime in 1912.
