Preserved for centuries, the Chaves stepping stones are still a must today.
Halfway between the New Pedestrian Bridge and the hot springs, the “Poldras de Chaves” are one of the wonders of the city. Before current engineering in the construction of bridges appeared, there was still a need to cross the river Tâmega.
Locals strategically placed stones (‘Poldras’ or ‘Alpondras’) so people could walk from one bank to the other and cut the distance to a few meters.
The banks of the river Tâmega and the beautiful surroundings are an unexpected bonus.
