The Parish Church of the divine Saviour owes its construction to Manuel José de Carvalho, who went to Brazil where he made his fortune. When he left his homeland, he made a promise that, in the event of
success, he would have a church built ‘like no other in ten leagues around’. In 1759, he sent a letter to Ribeira de Pena expressing his desire to have a church built, guaranteeing payment of all the costs. In this church, Camilo Castelo Branco married Joaquina Pereira de França for the first time.
