Parada’s wolf trap

por pessoa

The fojo de Parada is a unique example of a goat fojo. With its closed circular architecture, this type of fojo was usually located near villages with large herds of goats and sheep, prone to attack by wolves. Its maintenance was the responsibility of the village and the animal was given on a rotating basis by the owners of the flocks. This fojo is unique in that it has a cliff and a sinkhole carved out of the rock so that the animal could hide and try to survive the wolf’s attack. In 1917, the last wolf raid in Portugal took place here, using this type of fojo.
