Avelar Wolf Trap
por pessoa
A fojo is a permanent, communal trap used to capture wolves, usually built of stone and without mortar, strategically located in areas where packs pass. This animal has been abundant in the mountainous areas of the Iberian Peninsula for centuries, and its coexistence with humans has not always been peaceful. The first reference to this trap dates back to 1586, as the most important in the country. Initially it was used by the nobility for hunting and later by the community to kill wolves. Its capture was displayed before the entire community as a symbol of courage, strength and honour. In this way, the fojo is a heritage asset of great ethnographic, scientific and cultural importance.
