Alto do Cotorino Mound

The Alto Cotorino Mound, classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1990, bears witness to the oldest recorded human occupation in the Alvão Plateau, as a cemetery and a space of deep interaction between Neolithic communities and their ancestors. With a diameter of more than 20m, the mound exceeds 2m in height and bears a significant part of the mainstays of the burial chamber. The strategic location of this monument, with a wide field of vision over the Alvão Plateau, made it an unavoidable reference in the landscape that, in the nineteenth century, would come to know the epithet of “Homeland of the Dolmens”, due to the proliferation of megalithic monuments.
