“Nadir Afonso – a decade of absence”

“Nadir Afonso – a decade of absence” sets the tone for a colloquium to mark the 10th anniversary of his death

On Saturday 16 December, the Nadir Afonso Museum of Contemporary Art (MACNA) and the Nadir Afonso Foundation will mark the 10th anniversary of the death of the master from Flavi with a colloquium on his artistic legacy which, despite his physical absence, is still very much present.

Nadir Afonso marked 20th century Portuguese art and was one of the introducers of geometric abstraction in Portugal. The author of a unique body of work, where painting and architecture intersect and influence each other, he died on 11 December 2013 at the age of 93.

“Nadir Afonso – a decade of absence” is the theme of this meeting, which aims to perpetuate the work of the artist from Flavi, whose municipality honoured him by naming a contemporary art museum after him, a work designed by architect Siza Vieira, a landmark cultural facility in the north of the country.

The meeting will feature renowned speakers: António Quadros Ferreira, professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, Aníbal Ferreira, professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Professor Fátima Lambert, from the School of Education/Polytechnic of Porto and the President of the Nadir Afonso Foundation, Laura Afonso.

Scheduled to begin at 4pm in the MACNA auditorium, the talk will be moderated by Mariana Ribeiro, a journalist from the Lusa news agency. The meeting is open to the community, with free admission, limited to the capacity of the auditorium.

The MACNA is today a leading art museum in the interior of the country, with a collaboration agreement with the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, which, in addition to publicising the artist that gives it its name, has enabled a wide range of reference works by national and international artists to be exhibited in Chaves.
