Get ready for a deep immersion in nature and the history of Barroso!

The legendary Medronheiro Trail is back, establishing itself as one of the most eagerly awaited and iconic events on the Vezeira-Fafião Association’s calendar.

Covering a distance of approximately 9.5 kilometres, the walk sets off from the Barroso Ecomuseum, Fafião Centre, heading towards the impressive Fojo do Lobo. It is in the shadow of this community monument that the walk comes to life, with Alcides Afonso giving voice and memory to the ancestral relationship between man and the wolf in these mountains.

The route for this 15th edition follows the classic trail of the early years, celebrating the perfect fusion between the rural landscape and the rugged beauty of the mountains. Let yourself be guided by the freshness of the native vegetation, through chestnut groves, oak woods and beech forests, right to the realm of the arbutus trees that give this event its name. With autumn taking its first steps, the mountain slopes are already greeting us with the first wild mushrooms and the vivid red of ripe arbutus berries.

Among the most memorable moments of the route is the passage through Dornas, a place of great significance for Fafião, where our river, after winding its way for 14 kilometres, finally flows into the Cávado. But it is before this moment that you’ll find the halfway stop, which offers a superb panoramic viewpoint with a direct, unobstructed view of the majestic Fecha de Barjas, one of the most impressive waterfalls in our region.

Don’t stay at home.
