Montalegre | ‘After School – News from Barroso’: Pauliana Valente Pimentel
On 18 September 2026, the exhibition “After School – News from Barroso”, by photographer Pauliana Valente Pimentel, will open at the Barroso Ecomuseum – Espaço Padre Fontes, in Montalegre. It is yet another ‘Rota do Sentir’ project in support of the region.
Following the debut of works by Vânia Rovisco, Pedro Jóia and Rogério Nuno Costa—developed in collaboration with young people from the Terras de Barroso—we now welcome the photographic exhibition by artist Pauliana Valente Pimentel, who explains the origins of this idea in her own words:
“Taken in 2025 for the creation of Vânia Rovisco’s production *A Floresta*, these photographs follow teenagers from Montalegre beyond the confines of the school.
Between work and leisure, the landscape, the animals and the stone villages, the images capture the way these young people inhabit the region. Tradition is part of their daily lives. It emerges in their gestures, practices and celebrations, coexisting naturally with the contemporary experience of adolescence.
‘After School’ refers to the time when life takes place outside the classroom. The subtitle, ‘News from Barroso’, pays homage to the newspaper founded by Father António Fontes, which ceased publication twenty years ago. Just as that newspaper bore witness to the Barroso of its time, these photographs bear witness to the Barroso of today through the generation that lives there.”
With the dedicated support of the municipality of Montalegre and the Ecomuseum team, we have completed another stage of the Rota do Sentir, the development of which is still ongoing. The exhibition “After School – News from Barroso” will be on display from 18 September to 25 October.
