Joshua Benoliel
The documentary exhibition of photographs by Joshua Benoliel, a photojournalist many consider to be the father of photojournalism in Portugal, opens on the 25th. This is a travelling exhibition promoted by the Museum and Citizenship Division of the Assembly of the Republic. Visitors can see photographic records made by the author between 1906 and 1924, which depict a particularly important period in Portuguese political life.
Joshua Benoliel was born in 1873 in Lisbon to a Jewish family. He was a photojournalist during the reigns of King Carlos and King Manuel II, followed the events that led to the 1910 revolution, the monarchist revolts in the First Republic and accompanied the Portuguese Army that fought in Flanders during the First World War.
