Chaves | João Vieira – Pinto: Paintings by Letters

For João Vieira, the written word ceases to be merely language and becomes painting. Inspired by the verses of Cesário Verde — “I paint pictures with letters” — the artist transforms words into colour, gesture and matter.

These are works in which colours and textures are arranged in such a way as to transform into painting the letters or signs that Cesário had transformed into poetry in his verses.

In this exhibition, the poems take on a visual form, in a relationship where every painting is poetry and the two intersect without illustrating one another, revealing the visual and symbolic power of the signs that inhabit our modern world.
