Chaves | João Vieira – I Paint Pictures with Letters

For João Vieira, the written word ceases to be merely language and becomes painting. Inspired by the verses of Cesário Verde — ‘I paint pictures with letters’ — the artist transforms words into colour, gesture and matter.
These are works in which colours and textures are arranged in such a way as to transform the letters — or the signs — that Cesário had turned into poetry in his verses, into paintings.

In this exhibition, the poems take on a visual form, in a relationship where every painting is poetry and the two intersect without illustrating one another, revealing the visual and symbolic power of the signs that inhabit our modern world.
