Initially called the Chapel of St John of God, it was built during the reign of Dom João V in the 18th century. It was 1647 and the Royal Hospital served the soldiers and officers of the Infantry and Cavalry Regiments of the garrison of Praça de Chaves, under the name of São João de Deus, and was run by the friars of the Order of São João de Malta. The chapel was called the Royal Chapel because of the name of the Hospital. Several architectural elements of interest stand out, both neoclassical and baroque.
