These water mills are fed by the Levada de Santo Aleixo, which flows from the River Beça, about 11 kilometres away, and were used to grind cereals. The most common were wheat, maize, barley and oats. The Santo Aleixo Levada gave rise to the creation of the PR2 – Santo Aleixo Levada walking route.
