Chaves Castle – Tower

What remains of the medieval fortification was built in the Gothic period, possibly in the 13th century. King Afonso III granted the town a charter in 1258, to whom the low-medieval defence project is attributed. The placement of the keep next to a section of the wall is a strong indicator. As Portugal was at war with Castile due to the proclamation of national independence, Chaves became the main stronghold of Trás-os-Montes, receiving a strong reinforcement of its military structure. The walls were rebuilt between 1658 and 1662.
