He began taking photographs at the age of 14, at a local studio, where he learnt darkroom techniques and black-and-white photography. Since 1973, he has been developing the project ‘Faces with a Story’, documenting the people of Barroso with technical rigour and aesthetic sensitivity. An analogue photographer, attentive to digital developments, he combines tradition and modernity.

This exhibition is a realm of presence and memory. The faces presented here belong to Barroso — shaped by the altitude, the harsh climate and the attachment to the land. Many have already departed physically; they remain, however, in the intensity of the gaze captured by the photograph. Others remain among us. All endure as an active presence in the collective memory.

Pedro Canedo’s collection transforms the space into a sensitive cartography of Barroso. Each image raises a fundamental question: who are we when we look at the other? And what remains when time passes through matter? More than portraits, these works are presence. More than memory, they are heritage.

Supported by: Municipality of Chaves

Pedro Canedo was born in Morgade, Montalegre, in 1956.
