The artist’s travels took him to see a large part of the world, often driven by the impulse of a conversation, others by work and learning needs: from Brazil to the former Soviet Union, from Egypt to Greece, from the Scandinavian countries to Lebanon. These places served to allow the painter to continue his research into problems related to the composition of his signature works, which he wanted to be exact in their geometric dimension. Nadir Afonso thus appropriates cities to expand the universal vocation of his work, a choice that is certainly not unrelated to the fact that Nadir Afonso is also an architect – he worked in the studios of Le Corbusier and Óscar Niemeyer. The surprising installation of “Os lugares de Nadir” is based on the concept of “espacillimité”, through which the Flavian artist overcame the question of the spatio-temporal limits of the canvas.

Organised by: Municipality of Chaves and Nadir Afonso Foundation

“Nadir’s Places”, curated by MACNA’s advisor Óscar Faria, is an exhibition that aims to show the places visited and imagined by Nadir Afonso (1920 – 2013) through about six dozen paintings, 100 studies and documentary material, some of which are […]

[714
