SUMMARY:Montalegre | Exhibition: “Trotchos & Old Planks”
DESCRIPTION:The Ecomuseu de Barroso – Espaço Padre Fontes, in Montalegre, is pleased to announce the exhibition “Trotchos” & old boards, by Carlos Gonçalves, from 13 July to 15 September 2024.\n \n“Carlos Gonçalves was born in the town of Montalegre. At the age of six he went to Angola in the company of his parents, where he returned in the saga of decolonisation at the age of twenty.\n \nOn his return to the “metropolis”, he spent his entire professional career working for the Montalegre Town Council, during which time he also gave free rein to his creative spirit, carrying out tasks that have been forgotten over time (decorating craft fairs, building mobile sets for historical parades…) and also learning how to work leather from João Barroso (the late João das Malas).\n \nIn the meantime, his interest turned to sculpture and photography, in which he invested time and part of his savings for the sheer pleasure of looking for the aesthetic in the use of “old sticks and planks”.\n \nMontalegre is a mountainous region, served by few and poor communication routes, which has made it inhospitable and isolated from the rest of the world over the years, and still does today. That’s why Carlos Gonçalves felt the need to create his own space – space is not what we see but what we seek to discover, the hidden beyond what appears to us – and mould it into shapes using dried branches picked up in nature, giving aesthetic life to discarded pieces of wood, and fixing the landscape through a simple and poetic language that records the Barroso region.\n \nExhibiting at Espaço Padre Fontes – Ecomuseu do Barroso is an opportunity for Carlos Gonçalves to share some of his work with a wider and more diverse audience.”\n
